Meaning of whole Karpur Gauram Mantra
The Karpur Gauram Karunavtaram mantra glorifies Lord Shiva’s beauty and compassion while honoring Maa Parvati as his eternal Consort.
It describes Shiva as the one whose complexion is as White and as pure as camphor (Karpur). It further describes him as an ocean of compassion (Karunavtaram) and the one by whose grace the whole universe is (Samsara-Saram). He is adorned with the King of Nagas, as he wears him around his neck as a garland. The prayer further says that Lord Shiva along with Goddess Bhavani always resides in the hearts of the devotees, acknowledging the inseparable union of Shiva and Shakti.
The extended version of “Mandar Mala Kalital kaye…” is a separate mantra but is often sung in continuation to the Karpur Gauram Karunavtaram mantra. It further describes the beauty of Lord Shiva. He is describes wearning a Mala (Garland) of Mandaar, also known as Arka flowers, along with a mala of Skulls (Kapal) and is clothed only by the vast sky (Digambarae). The verse concludes by repeatedly bowing to both Shiva and Shakti, expressing deep devotion, reverence, and surrender to the divine couple.
